Located just south of the city, the Alma-Arasan and Ayusai gorges serve as the primary entry point for day-trippers. You can reach the trailheads easily via public bus or ride-hailing apps like Yandex.

You must pay an eco-fee of approximately 1,000 KZT at the checkpoint to enter, which can be done via the Kaspi app. From here, visitors hike high-mountain pastures, view cascading waterfalls, or explore the protected alpine reservoir.

Big Almaty Lake

1-2 hoursPassport required

This vivid turquoise alpine reservoir sits at an elevation of 2,511 meters. It is surrounded by jagged peaks reaching 4,000 meters. Swimming or walking directly down to the water is strictly prohibited to protect the city's drinking supply. Stay on the designated paths and bring your passport, as the lake is near the national border.

Kok-Zhailau Plateau

4-6 hoursModerate hike

This high-mountain pasture provides sprawling, panoramic views of Almaty and the surrounding alpine meadows. Reaching the plateau is a moderately challenging day hike. Bring at least 2 liters of water and a packed lunch to eat at the summit, as facilities are sparse deeper in the park.
